Make It a Safe & Happy Day

Parents are responsible for their children the entire time that they are at NIH. Some of the workshops may specify whether a parent should stay with their child during the event. (Sometimes there just isn't enough room for both parents and children in the room.) If you do not participate with the child in the workshop, you must be available to pick them up immediately after the workshop is complete.

Children are not permitted in laboratory or patient care areas without the permission of the supervisor and without constant supervision. Please review the NIH safety policy regarding children in the work place. Teach them safety basics before you bring them to work! Some good tips are here:

NIH Policy Manual: 3015 -
Admittance Of Children To
Hazardous Areas Issuing Office:

In the event that parents and children become separated, the National Institutes of Health Police Department is available to help. Guests needing assistance locating a lost child should contact police officers at either of the two locations within the Bulding 10 complex.

The main police desk is located in the lobby of the Warren Grant Magnuson side of Building 10, also known as the South Lobby. The second location is in the main lobby of the new Mark O. Hatfield building (the Clinical Research Center), also referred to as the North Lobby. Parents may wish to ensure their children have a means of contacting them in the event they become separated. This way, officers can quickly contact 'lost' parents and reunite them with their children. Guests may also call the main police office in Building 31B at (301) 496-2387 Voice, (301) 435-1908 TTY, for non-emergency assistance with any matter.
