  5. What is the age range for participants?

  6. Children between the ages of 8 and 15 can participate. Many activities have an age limit, such as 8 - 11 or 12 - 15; check the schedule carefully when you are selecting activities. Remember, too, that you must have your manager's prior approval in order to bring your child to work.

  7. Could I bring my 7-year-old with me?

  8. Children younger than 8 years old can not attend. If you have supervisory approval to bring a younger child to your office, that approval is something separate and apart from this NIH-sponsored event.

  9. Is this event exclusively for NIH employees?

  10. Contractors, visiting scientists, IRTAs, and everyone else working for the NIH is welcome to participate. Everyone needs to have supervisory approval to participate. Eligibility is verified based on the HHS e-mail address and employee ID number used at the time of registration.

  13. How and when can I register?

  14. There are three steps for registration.

    1. Create a New Account (profile) at http://takeyourchildtowork.nih.gov, anytime on or after Friday, April 4th.

    2. On Monday April 4th, the schedule will be available for viewing only. Print this out to review with your child.

    3. Activity selection opens on Tuesday, April 8th. Parents will be able to select the specific activities for their children. After activity selection, you will receive a confirmation e-mail. On Tuesday, April 15th, you will receive by email a final, summary listing all activities for which your child is registered. Print this email and bring it with you on the day of the event for your child's admission to each activity.

  15. Can I sign up my child for more than one session?

  16. The system will initially allow you to register each child for only one activity with limited space. On Tuesday, April 8th, you may register your child for the first activity. On Thursday, April 10th, you may return to register your child for a second activity, depending on space availability. Again, on Friday, April 11th, you will be able to select additional sessions, as available. The online registration system will open at 8:30 a.m. each day.

This form of registration ensures an equitable opportunity for all children to participate, both in activities that are limited in space or size and in those activities that are open to everyone.

  21. Should I take annual leave (AL) to bring my child?

  22. You may need to take annual leave. The NIH encourages each Institute to support its employees' participation in all Special Observances including this event. However, some supervisors or managers require that employees take annual leave to participate in Take Your Child to Work Day.

  23. Could this be a field trip for my child's (elementary or middle) school?

  24. No. The purpose of the event is for children to see what their parents actually do at work, as well as for parents to encourage a dialogue with their own children about their work life. Hopefully, your child's classmates will be able to go with their own parents to their respective worksites.

  25. Who will take care of my child?

  26. Parents are responsible for their children while at NIH. There will be no child-care services available. Children require constant supervision, and are not permitted in laboratory or patient-care areas without the permission of the area supervisor. Please review the NIH safety policy regarding children in the work place. Teach them safety basics before you bring them to work! Some good tips are here: NIH Policy Manual: 3015 - Admittance of Children to Hazardous Areas Issuing Office: ORS/DS/OSHB 496-3353, Release Date: 02/14/96
