3d Facial Images (Protocol)
 
Description:  The purpose of the study is to take picutures of faces of different people belonging to a group. Then using computers, we will combine all pictures to come up with one picture that shows a "typical" face of that group. This activity is part of an NIDCR clinical trial and will require parents to complete Admissions paperwork prior to their child's participation. Parents of children registered for this activity will be contacted by Clinical Staff prior to April 23rd.

Are you smarter than a NIDA Neuroscientist?
 
Description:  Patterned after the popular TV program "Who wants to be a Millionaire," the game will provide children with the opportunity to find out what they know about how illicit drugs and nicotine act in the brain. Participants will answer a series of questions on a variety of topics related to how drugs act in the brain. If they are unsure of an answer, there will be a neuroscientist available to help them. Winners will receive a certificate and everyone will receive publications designed for students and parents.

Bldg. 49 Animal Resources in Action!
 
Description:  Participants will learn how the Bldg. 49 Central Animal Facility (CAF) supports animal research for 6 (six) Institutes (NHGRI, NIMH, NINDS, NICHD, NIDCR, and NEI) at the NIH. After a brief introduction, participants will visit various areas including: Facility Support, Surgery, Transgenic Mouse Core, Histology Laboratory, and the Aquatic Animal Housing Area.

Bones and Evolution
 
Description:  Bones can tell us a lot about how living things change through the process of evolution. Participants will be invited to look at and handle a variety of vertebrate bones and to consider their differences and similarities. This will be a hands-on opportunity for children of all ages.

Bones and Teeth
 
Description:  Bones and Teeth are the hardest tissues in your body. In this session Dr. Young will explain how scientists do research on bones and teeth. Come hear about how these hard tissues are "made" and why they are so important. Dr. Young will also tell you what it is like to work at the NIH as a scientist and what a typical scientist does everyday. After a 15 minute presentation, there will be time for a "hands on" activity where you can bend bones and see how eggs in their shells can be soft by removing Calcium (a very important element in bone). All questions will be welcome.

Fantastic Voyage Through the Department of Laboratory Medicine
 
Description:  An educational venture through the many areas of a clinical laboratory. There will be a hands-on mock laboratory setting for the children and a guided tour of the main laboratory for adults. Activities include a demonstration of collecting blood specimens, chemical analysis, and the use of various equipment including microscopes to view blood cells, bacteria, and parasites.

Fun with Biomedical Imaging
 
Description:  Demonstrations and explanations of four imaging methods. Infrared: See an infrared image of your face and get a copy as a souvenir. Be amazed by tricks—see through an opaque bag; know what objects a person has touched, even after the person has left the Room; see invisible pictures drawn with an ice cube; see colorful patterns as warm and cold liquids mix. Light Microscopy: See beautiful microscopic algae swim on a glass slide. Learn about cell locomotion. Scanning Electron Microscopy: See a common household insect as you've never seen it before - "up close and personal," and Transmission Electron Microscopy: See what's inside a cell, when viewed through a high-powered electron microscope.

IAMB: Build a Lab
 
Description:  IAMB will demonstrate the AO's office function by having the participants Build A Lab. Children will be placed into lab groups. They will name their lab and be given a credit card to hire personnel, buy lab equipment, and travel to scientific meetings. Once these functions are completed, we will let them know how much money was spent and tell them whether or not they exceeded or under spent their budget. Then we will explain our role in helping our labs maneuver through the administrative processes.

Interview with a Mouse
 
Description:  Ace reporter Tracy Starr will interview Meredith, the lab mouse, about her experiences living and working at NIH. Find out what mice eat and drink, what their houses are like and what toys and special care they get. Meredith will tell us how important her work is in saving people's and animal's lives. Kids on the Grid
 
Description:  Interact With Kids Around the Country Using the Access Grid: An Electronic "Open House." Employees are invited to bring their children to the NLM Collab (Bldg. 38A; Room B1N30F) to see the Access Grid, a technology developed at Argonne National Laboratory enabling people at many different locations to meet virtually and see, hear and interact with each other in real time. Several universities and research centers will have their Access Grids on display for their visiting daughters and sons. Several sites will be online throughout the day. Although we cannot guarantee there always will be children at the other sites because of scheduling and time zones differences, there will be other adults present at remote sites and we're happy to at least demonstrate the technology.

Kids Staying Healthy - Weight Regulation
 
Description:  Exercise Lab: Dr. Chen and his team will be discussing the importance of exercise and hosting an activity in the exercise lab. Body Composition: Dr. Chen and his team will use various clinical tools (skin calipers and pedometers) to introduce the notion of why the body stores fat and talk about different ways to change personal habits for a healthy lifestyle. Just Enough For You: About Food Portions: The Clinical Center nutrition team will talk to the children about making healthy food choices with fun examples of "super size me". Take Charge Of Your Health: The 5SWN Clinical Center Nursing Department team will focus on ways children can reduce health care risks. They will be using a variety of fun activities to measure blood pressure and heart rate focusing on keeping the heart healthy. Teaching materials focusing on healthy lifestyles will be available for the children and their parents.

Live cells in 3D
 
Description:  The Biological Imaging Facility collects view of cells at the microscopic level. During the session we will watch cells move as they respond to stimuli. We will collect pictures of cells in multiple colors. Participants can use a laser scalpel to dissect a single cell from a slice of tissue. You can also use our anaysis software to build 3D images of cells from data we have collected.

Night of the Living Brain

Description:  Your tour guides will take you on a visit to a mouse, rat, frog, and zebrafish room and lab. Use of a Patient Simulator for Training in Hospital
 
Description:  Research patients in the hospital often need to be watched closely for drug or treatment effects. To train the nurses and doctors for this, a simulated patient may be used that looks and acts like a real patient. In this session, each child will assist in watching the patient, Mr.SimMan.
