How Loud is too Loud?

Description:  Every day we experience sound in our environment from MP3 players, computer games, TV, school concerts, basketball games, and a whole lot of other sources. But when a person is exposed to sounds that are too loud, sensitive structures in the inner ear can be damaged, causing noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL).

In this session, NIDCD intramural scientist Dr. Matt Kelley will explain how we hear and what happens to hearing structures when they are exposed to loud sounds. Dr. Kelley will also tell you why and how he studies hearing in his lab. After a 10-minute presentation, you will participate in hands-on activities and demonstrations. And you will receive a "goodie bag" that includes activity sheets to do at home and bookmarks, earplugs, and other fun items to help you protect your hearing from damaging noise for a lifetime.

Looking Deep Inside the Body: See How the Heart Beats with Cardiac MRI

Description:  Students will learn how doctors can take detailed pictures of the organs deep inside the body. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanners are powerful magnets about 30,000 times as strong as the Earth's magnetic field. MRI scanners take detailed pictures of the inside of the body non-invasively, in other words without entering the body. MRI scanners are commonly used to take picture of the brain, spine and joints. We have been developing and research ways of using MRI scanners to detect abnormalities in the heart and blood vessels. Students will get an opportunity to see how MRI pictures are taken and to see digital movies of how the heart beats. We will also show high-resolution 3-dimensional pictures of the blood vessels.
